CITY OF TIPTON – CITY COUNCIL MEETING – September 9, 2026
The regular meeting of the Tipton City Council was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday September 9, 2026, at City Hall. Those present were Mayor Jarrod Shivers, City Clerk Vanessa Tonne, City Superintendent Rod Barker and City Council members Ben Avery, Michael Ohnsat, Sara Dilley, Jessica Krier and Mark Towner.
Mayor Jarrod Shivers called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes from the August 3, 2026, meeting were reviewed and approved.
There were 6 late fees on utility bills and 0 letters sent. Mayor Shivers did share that the utilities have been shut off in a home in the city limits, due to a propane leak inside the home. The homeowner is not currently residing in the home.
The sales tax receipt for August was $6,415.47. Receipts for August were $16,364.26 and disbursements totaled $20,137.98.
The bills and receipts were reviewed, and the general ledger was discussed. Jessica Krier made the motion to pay bills; Ben Avery seconded the motion. Motion was carried.
City Clerk, Vanessa Tonne reported that a check has been received from Schoen’s Funeral Home for the burial of Nancy Streit. Also, Christine May reported to Vanessa that the remaining balance that was given by the Tipton Community Foundation for the Tipton Sports Complex Fitness Center, has been transferred over to the City of Tipton. This balance has been put towards the upkeep and payment of utilities for the Tipton Sports Complex. Vanessa did mention that she received an email regard to occupancy and rental price for the Tipton Sports Complex and The Tipton Community Hall. Mayor Shivers will follow-up and get this information sent back to the inquiring individuals.
Council member Mark Towner reported he is still receiving memberships for the fitness center. Several memberships are coming from people outside of the Tipton Community. Update on the basketball court in the city park was discussed, Mark will contact the individuals who are involved in renovating this area and see how soon they will want to start on this project. Council member Michael Ohnsat asked if the old baseball fencing on the southeast end of the football field could be take down, everyone agreed to have it brought down. Rod Barker will get the area cleaned up. The old flagpole was removed from its existing spot on the southwest end of the football field. It was repainted and placed in the center of the south end of football field.
Mayor Jarrod Shivers asked the Council if it was ok for the local Tipton 4-H Club to paint the trash cans around the park and baseball field. All were in favor of this idea.
City Superintendent Rod Barker said that the bathrooms on the north end of the park are currently locked up. There is a water leak in the city park area, and he is unable to locate it. Water has been turned off at the park, until the leak can be located. Street work will continue on John Street and Arnoldy Street this week, as long as it does not rain. Rod also said that Mitchell County will be resurfacing the county road that goes through main in Tipton, at some point. Last time they just resurfaced the middle of main street, this time the county would like to resurface all of main street, curb to curb.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm. Next meeting date is Monday, October 5, 2026, at 7:30 pm.
